The buzz around the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 class is starting to pick up again as we approach a potential commitment window, the opening of the transfer portal, and the late signing period.
Here’s some of the latest I’ve heard regarding Tyran Stokes.
There has been talk that Kansas was negotiating around a $6M NIL number, but the information I’ve heard suggests Kansas is closer to the $3M range. They may be somewhat hesitant — or potentially unable — to go much higher, considering their deep freshman class they’ll need to retain and the resources they may want to allocate to the transfer portal.
There also appears to be some uncertainty among Kansas boosters and staff about investing more money into another No. 1 recruit, especially with Stokes being perceived by some as “high maintenance.” That hesitation could also be influenced by what has transpired this season with DP.
Kansas has also recently re-engaged with Top-20 recruit Quentin Coleman, who decommitted from Wake Forest. The rumor is Kansas has made a strong NIL offer that has placed them near the top of his list, along with Illinois.
Kentucky, on the other hand, has remained consistent from the beginning. It has been clear how badly the staff wants Stokes, and how strong their NIL position is. He has essentially been the No. 1 priority for the Kentucky staff, possibly even ahead of some potential portal options.
We know Stokes’ coach has confirmed that another visit to Kentucky could happen, though the logistics remain unclear. The schedule is tight with the NCAA Tournament approaching, and Stokes will also be:
• March 19–21: The Throne National Championship (New Jersey)
• March 31: McDonald’s All-American Game (Arizona)
• April 1–4: Chipotle Nationals (Indiana, if Rainier Beach qualifies)
If Rainier Beach makes Chipotle Nationals, that could create a potential window for a Kentucky visit around that time. That said, Kentucky fans shouldn’t panic if another visit doesn’t materialize.

Here are a few of the rumors I’ve heard on the Kentucky side:
1. Kentucky’s NIL package is believed to be $4M+ from collectives, with another $2M+ from Nike and sponsors, potentially pushing the total north of $6M.
2. I haven’t been able to confirm an exact date, but I’ve heard that Stokes’ mother has met and had dinner with the Kentucky staff since his February visit to Kansas.
3. Kentucky is believed to have retaken the lead from Kansas and continues to push hard as we move back into commitment watch.
There is still no confirmed commitment timeline. Stokes could commit tomorrow, or he could wait until the late signing period begins April 15 and on. If you’re looking for specific dates to watch, a couple possibilities that have been mentioned a few times are the McDonald’s All-American Game on March 31, an the Nike Hoop Summit on April 11th.
The question now:
Can Mark Pope land his first major recruiting win despite all the noise surrounding this season?
