After eight straight additions on the offensive side of the ball, Kentucky got back in the defensive line market. Anwar Stewart added Wyoming transfer defensive tackle Jaden Williams to his room on Friday night. The Mountain West product was a reliable rotation piece for the Cowboys in 2024 and attracted some big-time programs during his second recruitment.
Player Background
Williams was a low three-star recruit and ranked sub-2,000 in overall rankings according to 247 Composite, an average of the reputable recruiting services. Williams committed to Wyoming out of Campbell Hall School located just outside of Los Angeles in Valley Village, California. Williams got to Wyoming at under 250 pounds, but he’s up to 290 after three years in Laramie. A redshirt and a year in waiting began things for Williams, but he became a valuable rotation piece as his redshirt sophomore season progressed. In the first five games of the season he only eclipsed 20 snaps once in a game at Arizona State where he had three tackles, and a pressure against the Big 12 champions. Williams finished the season with seven games over twenty snaps, including four games over thirty. Williams finished the season with 19 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and 12 pressures in 305 total snaps for the Cowboys. Williams was an effective situational defender for the Cowboys, and he projects to fill the same role in Lexington.
Program Fit
Kentucky’s system calls for big defensive linemen who can eat up blocks without being moved from their spot. While Williams is only 290 pounds currently, he plays with good strength and explosiveness to keep offensive lineman off balance. Williams gets off the line as fast as anyone on the field, and often creates knockbacks converting speed to power. In games I watched he was most often brought in once the opposing offense entered the redzone as someone who could eat up blocks in the run game or create havoc in the pass game. A 7.6% pressure rate on pass rush snaps from the defensive tackle position can be a valuable piece to rebuilding a defensive line losing a massive amount of production this offseason. Williams holds firm against double-teams often, allowing his linebacker to become an all-conference player behind him.
Position Outlook
Defensive tackle had a serious lack of depth at points in 2024, and it was looking to be a similar situation before the addition of Williams. Deone Walker should be a day-two pick in the NFL draft and Keeshawn Silver made a surprise entrance to the transfer portal before landing at USC leaving Kentucky razor thin at the position. Williams has the lower body strength and explosiveness to play nose tackle in the SEC, but he only played 11.4% of his snaps at nose tackle this past season. Josiah Hayes projects to be the starter at this position, but Williams brings juice and speed to the position that should complement Hayes well. Converted offensive lineman Austin Ramsey and Dennious Jackson make up the interior of the defensive line, but players such as Tavion Gadson and Kendrick GIlbert have the versatility to move inside or out. At the end of the day, Kirby Smart gave Williams an offer to play on the Georgia defensive line and Kentucky felt the pressure to finish the deal before he could make the trip to Athens. That’s a good sign.
