Kentucky Enters Knoxville as a 17.5-Point Underdog: Is There Room for Optimism?

By Paul Novielli Nov 1, 2024

The Kentucky Wildcats are walking into Knoxville as big underdogs, with a 17.5-point spread against them, a 13-16 record in their last 29 games, and a three-game SEC losing streak. Still, there’s a flicker of hope. Kentucky has surprised us before, winning two of their last three games against top-ten teams and even managing back-to-back wins on the road. So, could they have a shot at upsetting Tennessee?

A Shaky Tennessee Offense vs. a Kentucky Defense Trying to Hang Tough

Tennessee’s offense has been hit-or-miss this season. They tend to start games slow, and their quarterback, Nico Iamaleava, hasn’t exactly delivered on the preseason hype. What’s really kept the Vols afloat is their defense—it’s one of the best in the country, ranked third overall with an impressive 81.3% stop rate. That defense has been a game-changer for Tennessee. For Kentucky, who’s been back-and-forth on who starts at quarterback and struggles to put up points in SEC games, breaking through Tennessee’s defense will be a tall order.

Kentucky’s Defense: Can They Hold Up?

Kentucky’s defense has had flashes of real potential, especially early on when they ranked in the top ten nationally. Their front seven has been a highlight, and they’ll need every bit of that strength in this matchup. Losing key guys like Jackson and Weaver hurts, though. For Kentucky to keep it close, they’ll need to win the turnover battle, hold onto the ball as much as possible, and force Tennessee into mistakes. They’ll have to get creative to punch through that tough Tennessee defense.

The Bowl Picture: Kentucky’s Long Road Ahead

After this game, Kentucky’s path to bowl eligibility isn’t easy. They’ll need at least two SEC road wins—either against Tennessee here or Texas later on—plus wins over Murray State and Louisville. Given their up-and-down offense, it won’t be a cakewalk. But Kentucky’s shown resilience this season, and sometimes that’s all it takes to turn things around, even when the odds aren’t exactly in their favor.
