Kentucky is heavily interested in San Diego State’s BJ Davis

Kentucky has added San Diego State guard BJ Davis to its radar as the staff continues to look at potential backcourt additions in the transfer portal. The 6’0 guard is a defense-first option who could fill a backup point guard role and bring consistency off the bench — something that Kentucky has lacked in the backcourt (also due to injuries).

Bleed Blue’s Dylan Brake was the first to hear of the news:

BJ Davis is as a defensive-minded guard who can become an asset from the bench due to his consistency and reliability in terms of providing steady minutes. He had a DBPM of 3.9 this past season at San Diego State. The year prior, it was 4.3. That is considered elite compared to most.

Davis was a key contributor this past season at San Diego Stage. He averaged 10.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He also averaged 22 minutes per game. Additionally, he shot 37.4% from three on roughly 3 attempts per game. Not bad to have a solid shooter off the bench that can also defend, right?

Davis also reached double digits 17 times this past season. Other schools currently in the mix are Auburn and Oklahoma State.

He would be a great addition to Kentucky, and having a guard like him would be very valuable. With a potential addition of Robert Wright, having a guard with defense and elite defensive upside would be incredibly valuable to have. He is not a high usage guard capable of scoring points in bunches: His role is to provide a elite disruption threat as a defender and be an excellent ball handler when needed.

Hopefully this is a player Kentucky continues to pursue.
