Kentucky native Jasper Johnson enters the transfer portal

Kentucky guard Jasper Johnson has entered the transfer portal following his freshman season in Lexington. The Kentucky native and former five-star recruit, appeared in 35 games during the 2025-26 season but struggled to carve out a consistent role in Kentucky’s backcourt. Jasper averaged averaged 4.9 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 rebounds per game while shooting 40 percent from the field in limited minutes. He scored in double figures four times and saw most of his action early on in the season coming off of the bench.

There was significant preseason buzz surrounding Johnson after strong early performances, including an impressive game against Purdue, but his role became inconsistent during SEC play. Johnson saw fluctuating minutes and couldn’t carve out a consistent role.

With Kentucky expected to be active in the transfer portal and potentially adding multiple backcourt pieces, Johnson’s decision to explore other opportunities makes sense. Several players on the roster are still weighing their futures, and the Wildcats are expected to lose more players to the transfer portal in the coming days.

For Johnson, the transfer portal could offer a fresh start and an opportunity for a larger role. The Lexington native still possesses high upside, and a change of scenery could allow him to develop into the scoring guard many expected when he first arrived at Kentucky.

Kentucky, meanwhile, continues to reshape its roster as Mark Pope looks to bounce back and build toward the 2026-27 season.
