No. 14 Kentucky women’s basketball fell to No. 7 LSU in a battle at Historic Memorial Coliseum
on Sunday while celebrating Senior Day. This victory marked coach Kim Mulkey’s 750th win.
Despite the loss, this was a day full of highlights for Kentucky. The program honored seniors
Dazia Lawrence and Georgia Amoore before the game. Each senior had a memorable
performance with Amoore leading the game scoring 16 points and Lawrence scoring her 1500
career point.
The first five on the court were Teonni Key, Lawrence, Amoore, Amelia Hassett, and Clara
Strack.
The Cats opened strong with a putback from Amelia Hassett to kickstart a 6-0 run. The run was
capped off by a pair of free throws and a basket from Lawrence. LSU responded, but Strack
grew Kentucky’s lead with a putback of her own, 8-2. The Tigers narrowed the gap, but it wasn’t
enough, Amoore wrapped up the first quarter with a three and a pair of free throws. The score
was 14-12 Cats.
Lawrence got things moving in the second quarter scoring the first two points followed by a
Strack basket and a Hassett putback and three. Lawrence sank a three accompanied by a
basket from Clara Silva from the corner to finish up a 12-0 Kentucky run.
Amoore kept things going, landing a pair of back-to-back threes and executed a scoop to hoop
to grow Kentucky’s lead, 36-20. Silva landed one final basket for the Cats and the Tigers battled
scoring the final four points, 38-32.
The Tigers found their footing after halftime tying up the game and eventually taking their first
lead, drilling a three. Saniah Tyler widened the gap with a three, but LSU followed it with eight
unanswered points getting them within one, 41-40. LSU continued this momentum leading
49-44 at the end of the third.
LSU continued fighting, opening the fourth quarter with a pair of baskets. Kentucky finally
showed some signs of life with a pair of layups from Amoore and Strack. Strack pushed the
Cats further with another basket and Amoore drilled a basket giving the lead back to the Cats
for a brief moment 52-51. The Tigers took the lead right back after scoring the next four, 55-52.
Strack tossed a pair of free throws and Silva hit a jumper giving Kentucky back the lead, 56-55.
The teams continued to exchange baskets and the Tigers would end up putting the game away
with one last three-pointer with only 50 seconds remaining.
Kentucky will remain at home this Thursday to host Tennessee in the Historic Memorial
Coliseum. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. EST.
