Marcus Spears Jr. gets a visit from Mark Pope

Kentucky’s pursuit of the nation’s top-ranked prospect Marcus Spears Jr. appears to be picking up some momentum.

Head coach Mark Pope was in Duncanville, Texas this weekend for the TABC Showcase, where 5-star power forward Marcus Spears Jr. was the focal point. According to Bleed Blue’s Dylan Lewis, Pope made Spears his top priority during the event. Additionally, Mark Pope met with him and his father following the games, another sign that Kentucky is pushing hard for the top-ranked prospect in the Class of 2027.

The timing of Pope’s visit is noteworthy. Bleed Blue Network has heard that Spears and Kentucky are in the process of working out an official visit, and Pope’s presence in Texas helps add fuel to the fire. The growing belief is that the Wildcats are setting up to be firmly in the mix for one of the most coveted prospects in the class.

Kentucky also has a family connection to Marcus Spears through its 2027 recruiting class. 5-star guard Ryan Hampton, who committed to Kentucky earlier this month is Spears’ cousins. Interestingly, Marcus Spears Jr. and Hampton spent time together on a fishing trip, a reminder the relationship that already exists between Kentucky’s commitment and its biggest target.

While there’s still plenty left to play out in the recruitment of Marcus Spears Jr., Kentucky continues to make their intentions clear. Pope is investing time in building that relationship, with an official visit nearing. Kentucky is positioning themselves as a serious contender in hopes of picking up another 5-star recruit in the Class of 2027.
