Pope is the Change We Didn’t Realize We Needed

Rupp’s Got Its Buzz Back

There’s something different in the air at Rupp Arena, and it’s not just the start of a new season—it’s Coach Pope. When UK announced he was coming on board, I didn’t know what to think. We’d all been hoping for one of those big names like Nate Oats or Scott Drew, so when we got a former player who wasn’t even on the radar, I was skeptical.

But watching him bring this energy and seeing the fans and team react, I’ve realized something: this is the change we didn’t even know we were waiting for.

A Fresh Start for Big Blue Nation

The last few years with Coach Calipari felt off. Sure, we kept cheering and filling Rupp, but there was a disconnect. The offense seemed clunky, the defense was flat, and the same mistakes kept popping up game after game. You could feel the frustration—and the divide. Some fans held on to hope, but a lot of us were losing faith in where things were headed.

Then Pope came in.

From his very first press conference, it was clear this wasn’t just any hire. The arena was packed with fans and former players there to welcome him. Pope wasn’t just talking; he was bringing back the family feeling, the heart of what makes Kentucky basketball special. This guy didn’t just show up with a coaching resume—he’s worn the blue and white himself. He knows the expectations because he’s lived them.

In just two months, he brought in 12 new players who actually want to be here and buy into his vision. And he didn’t just stop with the players—he put together a solid coaching staff, making sure he’s got the right team behind him. Pope knows this isn’t a one-man job.

A Coach Who Feels Like One of Us

Coach Pope isn’t just a title or a new hire; he’s the kind of person Big Blue Nation needed. He’s down-to-earth, he’s constantly on the move, meeting fans and keeping the Kentucky spirit alive. His family’s all in, too. You can see it on their faces at games and around town—they love this place and the people here.

And that connection with the fans is everything. Pope didn’t come into Rupp expecting everyone to just get behind him automatically. He earned it, shaking hands, sharing laughs, and showing anyone who had doubts that he’s here for the right reasons. And because of that, we’re all in, too. There’s a real sense of unity around the team, something we’ve been missing for a long time.

On the Court: A Team That Cares

Watching Kentucky play now, you can feel the change. It’s not that disjointed play we’d gotten used to. Under Pope, there’s real teamwork, strong defense, and players who actually seem to have each other’s backs. This isn’t a group of egos—it’s a team playing for something bigger.

From the exhibitions to the first couple of games, you can see the energy, the ball movement, and the unity that Big Blue Nation loves. And it’s not just the players who are fired up—we’re all feeling it.

For the first time in years, we’re cheering for a team that feels like Kentucky basketball again.

Thank You, Coach Pope

Coach Pope might not have been the name we expected, but he’s definitely the one we needed. He’s brought passion, energy, and that family-first mindset that’s been missing. Right now, I can’t imagine anyone better to bring our CATS back to greatness.

Thanks to Pope, we’ve got a team we can truly believe in again.
